The Science Behind Auto-Dimming Rearview Mirrors

The Troxler Effect delays driver reaction time by 1.4 seconds, which is significant enough to lead to an accident. It occurs when a vehicle behind you shines bright headlights in your rearview mirror and then leaves your line of sight. Your vision is left with a blindspot once the bright headlights exit your mirror. Auto-dimming rearview mirrors prevent the Troxler Effect from happening by automatically darkening the mirror to minimize glare when bright headlights are detected. They are equipped with electrochromism technology. Ambient light sensors within these mirrors detect glare and send a charge to the electrochromatic gel. The gel darkens which in turn limits how much light can reflect into your eyes.
